Orthodoxy: I Believe in God the Father Almighty (video) |

|
In the first installment of our new series on the apostle's creed, we look into the origin and function of this ancient rule of faith. Instead of buying into the myth that beliefs don't matter and doctrines aren't important, our study of the creed demonstrates the intrinsic relationship between orthodoxy (right belief) and orthopraxy (right practice). What you believe about the creed matters in real life, starting with this most primal belief--in "the Father Almighty" who is called trinity. Part one introduces us to what the creed does, what the creed doesn't do, and the identity of the almighty God who alone is the object of Christian faith.

Over and against the body denying, escapist "spirituality" of the gnostics and the spirit-denying materialism of many in our world, Christians insist that God is the creator of both heaven AND earth. Calling out the ancient heretic Marcion, this week we see how vital it is to return to the apostolic vision of God as the Maker.

Jesus stands not only at the center of the creed, but at the center of everything that has to do with life on earth and in heaven, everything that has to do with life with God. He is the Christ, the Son of God that we call Lord. Like a cosmic edition of American Idol, people often struggle to pick their own Jesus from a large line-up of pretenders. Sometimes we even try to put together our own Jesus like Mr. Potatohead. But when you meet the real Jesus for yourself, you are forever marked, and the only response, like John on Patmos, is to fall down and worship.

Jesus died for us in that He offered Himself as the sacrifice for our sin, but He also invites us to die with Him. In order to join Jesus in His resurrection, we must join Him in His death. In order to join Him in His death, we must first join Him in the garden of Gethsemane. While the cross is the central event in human history, the garden could in fact be the most crucial moment in the life of Jesus Himself.

In our first Easter at Eastland, it's resurrection in 3-D. Christians believe that in Jesus' resurrection, something about the world was fundamentally changed. What we need then is not for something else to "happen" to us, but rather the grace of 3-D glasses so that we might see Jesus at work in ordinary things. It is often in something as mundane as the breaking of bread that He can be recognized.

Orthodoxy: He ascended into heaven...he will come to judge (video) |

Each one of us is either being conformed to the image of the accuser or the image of the advocate. Knowing that the judge is at the door and will sort all things out, we are given a stern warning in James not to grumble against each other and thus try to steal THE judge's job. Instead of imitating the accuser, we are called to join our advocate in speaking words of blessing and grace, patiently waiting for the judge that knows all the information we don't know--only His judgments are wise and true.

The Holy Spirit is not added zest or zeal to the Christian life--He is the third person of the trinity, and what you believe about Him shapes what you believe about everything. Contending for the whole church to be Pentecostal, this week's message explains why it was more advantageous for Jesus to ascend and leave us the Comforter. Heaven and earth collide as the Spirit brings the coming reign of God into the present.

The primary theme of Paul's letters is the unity of the church. In order to be the kind of witness to the world Jesus prayed we would be become in John 17, a united community is not an option but a necessity. In this hard-hitting plea for unity in the Spirit to prevail, we experience the urgent plea of the Scriptures themselves to recover the radical idea of one (and only one) church.

The open arms of the cross display God's heart for the world--to forgive and not to condemn. Yet strangely to modern ears, forgiveness is closely bound up with the doctrine of the church--the people who offer God's reconciliation through the power of the Spirit. Over and against the privatization of matters of sin and forgiveness, we are called to embrace the priestly function of ALL believers to speak the word of God's forgiveness on His behalf.

Strangely enough, the doctrine of the resurrection of the body might seem novel or new to many Christians. But in fact it's at the heart of the scandal of early Christian belief. Recapturing the scandal of our sensuous God is crucial--He isn't just interested in some floating hazy thing called a spirit but wants to redeem and reconfigure THIS body and THIS skin to enjoy Him forever. We must embrace this most misunderstood line of the creed if we want to maintain continuity/keep the story straight, if we hope to maintain not just the promise but the threat of resurrection, and if we are to maintain clarity and focus in our mission on the earth.
